a0.3.0 is live. This update is about feel — tightening combat, cleaning up the interface, and making the arena a better-looking place to die in.
Boss Preview
Stepping through a boss door now pauses the run and shows a confirmation screen before you commit. It names the boss, shows how many phases you’re up against, and gives you a read on where you stand — level, kill count, active modifiers. If you’d rather clear another room first, you can back out.
It’s a small thing that makes a real difference when you’re running low on HP and not sure if you should push.
Arena Backgrounds
The arena now has a layered parallax background — mountains, clouds, distant peaks — that drifts slowly while you play. It’s subtle but it makes the arena feel like a place instead of a void.
UI Overhaul
Nearly every panel was rewritten to use a proper theme system instead of per-node style overrides. In practice:
- Consistent typography and colors everywhere — no more mismatched font sizes between panels
- Recruit card now shows rank and elemental affinity in a clean two-column layout
- Resource HUD drops the label prefixes (“Gold:”, “Food:”) — the layout makes them obvious
- Arena HUD panels follow the same theme as island UI
It sounds like housekeeping. It is. But it also means future panels will be consistent by default rather than by coincidence.
Arena Map Improvements
Room scenes no longer rotate to fill door configurations. Rotated rooms caused tile visibility issues and made the floor feel like the same few templates scrambled. Each room now appears only in its designed orientation, and the floor generator validates door configs before placing rooms to guarantee every layout has a matching scene. This means the dungeon looks more intentional.
Obstacles are now loaded correctly for all room types, not just combat rooms — treasure and event rooms render their geometry properly.
Enemy Behaviour
Two changes that make enemies feel better to fight:
Corner steering. Enemies no longer grind into walls when chasing you around an obstacle. They now detect wall contacts and nudge themselves around corners. Running behind cover actually works as a tactic now.
Faster spawns. The safe spawn window (time before enemies can attack after entering a room) dropped from 1.5 seconds to 0.6 seconds. Rooms feel more immediate.
XP Scaling
Enemies now award different XP amounts: regular enemies give 1, elites give 2, bosses give 5. The XP threshold for levelling up scales steeper, so levels feel like milestones rather than noise. Run levels are harder to hit but more meaningful when you do.
What’s Next
Enemy variety, more recruit traits, and island economy tuning based on what’s emerging from playtest data.
